What is the main cause of urine infection?

A Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that takes place in any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra, with the most common locations being in the lower parts of the urinary tract.

UTIs are typically caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract and spreading into the bladder or other parts of the urinary system. In more than 90% of cases, the bacteria known as E. coli is responsible for causing this.

While the urinary tract is designed to protect itself against bacteria, sometimes defenses sometimes fail – the result of which is a full-blown infection that requires medical intervention to treat.

What are the signs of a urinary tract infection?

When you have a UTI, the signs are often very noticeable and often alarming if you don’t know what happening. A UTI causes inflammation in the interior lining of the urinary tract which may result in the following symptoms:

– Bloody pee.
– Chills.
– Cloudy pee.
– Fatigue.
– Fever.
– Foul-smelling pee.
– Frequent urination.
– Mental changes or confusion.
– Nausea and vomiting.
– Pain in your abdomen, pelvic area, or lower back.
– Pain in your penis.
– Painful urination (dysuria).
– Pressure in you lower pelvis.
– Urge incontinence.
– Urinary incontinence.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to book in to see your primary physician as soon as possible. UTIs require antibiotics to treat and will not resolve on their own. Your doctor will also want to check to ensure that no other medical issue is causing and/or impacting your current symptoms.

What’s the difference between a bladder infection and a UTI?

A UTI refers to any infection that happens within any part of the urinary system. It is a broad term that encompasses the urethra, bladder, kidneys, ureters, and all the linings and components that make up the urinary tract.

In contrast, a bladder infection (also known as cystitis) is a very specific infection. It relates to the inflammation of the bladder and all the signs and symptoms that come along with infection in that area.

While not all UTIs become bladder infections, they can certainly lead to them developing if they remain untreated for too long. It’s important to seek treatment for a UTI quickly to prevent the infection from spreading to other areas, such as your bladder and kidneys.

How do you get rid of a UTI fast?

UTIs will not resolve on there own and require prescription medication to treat. Your healthcare provider will run an assessment on you and will then proceed to select the best antibiotic to treat the bacteria causing your infection.

Commonly prescribed antibiotics for UTIs are:

– Nitrofurantoin.
– Sulfonamides.
– Amoxicillin.
– Cephalosporins.
– Doxycycline.
– Fosfomycin.
– Quinolones.

It’s extremely important that you finish all the antibiotics given to you as prescribed, even if your symptoms resolve and you begin to feel better. Not finishing your full round of antibiotics can lead to the infection returning – and the reoccurrence is often more challenging to treat. If you don’t finish all your UTI medication, you run the risk of your infection returning and becoming more challenging to treat.
